Preparations Referrals are exclusively for Internal Medicine care, not primary care, and all visit records will be sent to the patient's primary veterinarian. We use Fear Free techniques, including oral pre-med chill protocols and injectable sedation, for patient restraint and handling. The visit includes 6 months of follow-up between the primary veterinarian and Dr. Dowling, with optional consultations and follow-ups with owners available for an additional fee.

Some procedures offered by Caring Hands Internal Medicine department include:

  • Diagnostic abdominal, non-cardiac thoracic, and cervical ultrasounds
  • Ultrasound-guided needle aspirate and core biopsy sampling
  • Endoscopy of the intestinal tract, lower urinary tract, and airway (nasal, nasopharynx, trachea, and bronchi) to diagnose underlying diseases in these regions
  • Joint taps to evaluate multi-limb lameness and effusion
  • Endoscopic foreign body retrieval (gastric, esophageal, nasal, tracheal)
  • Diabetic consultation for improved glycemic control
  • Feeding tube placement

Laser Surgery Ultrasounds are required before intestinal and urinary endoscopies. Dr. Dowling will review any external ultrasound images and decide if more imaging is needed. For airway diseases, further imaging may be recommended by Dr. Dowling on a case-by-case basis.

*This is an outpatient Internal Medicine Service. Initial referral for patients requiring after-hours care/hospitalization should be to a full-service, 24-hour facility or will need transport at the close of business.
