Life-Saving Advanced Imaging for Pets
Caring Hands Bristow utilizes both radiology and ultrasound to enhance diagnostic capabilities in pet care. An ultrasound, or sonogram, uses sound waves generated by a probe to create visual images. These images are displayed on a monitor, offering the veterinarian a 2D representation of your pet’s internal organs.
Radiology, or X-ray, is a crucial diagnostic tool for imaging soft tissues, internal organs, and skeletal structures. Sometimes, combining digital X-rays and ultrasound provides the most comprehensive evaluation of your pet’s health issue. Digital X-rays show the dimensions, form, and placement of organs, while ultrasound allows the veterinarian to observe the internal composition of these organs. Ultrasound is a gentle, non-invasive procedure that most pets tolerate well.

Ultrasound: A Non-Invasive Diagnostic Tool for Pets
Ultrasound, or sonography, utilizes sound waves from a probe to create visual images displayed on a monitor, offering a 2D representation of your pet’s internal organs. This technology allows the veterinarian to visualize and assess various internal organs and systems, including the heart, liver, gallbladder, spleen, kidneys, pancreas, and bladder.
For comprehensive evaluation, combining digital X-rays and ultrasound is often recommended. Digital X-rays illustrate organ size, shape, and position, while ultrasound permits visualization of the internal composition of these organs. Ultrasound is a gentle, non-invasive procedure that most pets tolerate well.
To ensure clear imaging during ultrasound, the abdomen may be clipped of hair. A gel is then applied, and the ultrasound probe is moved methodically over the abdominal surface to capture images of each organ.
Ultrasound provides immediate, real-time results. In some cases, images may be sent to a veterinary radiologist for further review, which may delay the final report by a few days.
Anesthesia is typically unnecessary for ultrasound examinations. The procedure is painless, and most pets remain comfortable on a soft blanket during the scan. A sedative may be used for particularly anxious pets.
Ultrasound’s usefulness in pregnancy confirmation, internal organ assessment, and cardiac function evaluation makes it an invaluable, non-invasive diagnostic tool for protecting your pet’s well-being.
