Carole Richards, DVM Co-Owner of Caring Hands Animal Hospital of Merrifield
Dr. Richards, Co-Owner, is a graduate of Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in Ithaca, New York. Originally from Illinois, she has a degree in Biology from Eureka College, the Alma Mater of President Ronald Reagan. Dr. Richards has been practicing in the Northern Virginia area since graduation from veterinary school and has interests in soft tissue surgery, dentistry and shelter medicine. She is active in the animal care community, serving as medical director for a non-profit in West Virginia. In her free time, Dr. Richards and her husband enjoy running. They share their home with 1 dog (Roofus) and 3 cats (Bump, Wishbone, and Pickles).
Karen Murphy, DVM Co-owner of Caring Hands Animal Hospital of Merrifield
Dr. Murphy, Co-Owner, is a graduate of Auburn University. She did a post-graduate internship at Angel Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, MA. She practiced in North Carolina’s Piedmont region for 5 years before joining Caring Hands Animal Hospital. She has been a part of the Caring Hands family for over 10 years beginning at our Centreville office for 5 years and then opening the Bristow location in 2005. Her interests include preventative medicine, internal medicine, surgery and ultrasound.
Kimberly Madigan, DVM
Dr. Madigan, associate veterinarian, grew up in western Massachusetts and attended the University of Massachusetts, Amherst where she completed her bachelors degree in animal science/pre-vet. Dr. Madigan received her veterinary degree from the University of Glasgow, Scotland in 2014. Dr. Madigan completed a small animal rotating internship at the New England Animal Medical Center in West Bridgewater, MA. She moved to Virginia in 2015 and joined our practice in 2017. Her special interests include internal medicine, oncology, soft tissue surgery and preventative medicine.
Dr. Madigan shares her home with her two lovely cats Sophie and Gus. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, traveling, hiking, and spending time with family and friends.
Dr. Velling, associate veterinarian, earned his Bachelor’s degree in Zoology (1988) and his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (1992) from the University of California at Davis. After he graduated, he joined the Peace Corps, where he worked with the government in Morocco to help eradicate rabies. When he returned to the United States, he ran his own practice in Ashburn from 1998 to 2013 and then became the lead veterinarian for the State Department’s overseas Explosive Detection Dog program. Dr. Velling is excited to join Caring Hands after living for 2 years in Texas as a consultant. His professional interests include surgery, behavior, and working with exotic animals. In his free time, he enjoys travel, cooking, sports, and spending time with his wife, 2 girls, rescue dog Boone and rescue cat Jill.
