Heat Advisory for Exotic Pets

This time of year, many people want to share their time outside with their pets. However, some pets like ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits, and chinchillas should not be outside in the summer heat. Please remember, these pets are very sensitive to heat and humidity and can succumb to heat stress and stroke within minutes. If the temperature is above 75 degrees and high humidity, the exotics should stay indoors in the air conditioning.

If for some reason, your exotic pet is exposed to the heat and becomes lethargic and over heated, DO NOT  immerse in water or wrap in wet towels. This will send the pet into shock and worsen the situation. You need to immediately get to the veterinarian for emergency care.

Although birds can handle heat and may enjoy time out of the house, please be aware of the risks of West Nile Virus in our area. Birds are susceptible to this infection that is transmitted by mosquitos. If you want to take your bird cage outside for a bit, please consider surrounding the cage with a mosquito netting. DO NOT spray mosquito repellents or use candles around the bird as this can cause severe illness in birds and possibly sudden death.
