Dr. Newman, Co-Owner, is a graduate from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University in 1992. He has practiced veterinary medicine in Georgia, Nevada, and in Virginia. His interests include emergency medicine, surgery, and shelter medicine. He and his wife, Michelle, have three children: a daughter, Virginia, and twins, Elisabeth and Jack. His extended family consists of two dogs: Honeysuckle and Daisy May; three cats: Three, Tangerine, and Kip; two Guinea pigs: Nonie and Milkshake; and bird: Spencer; and a horse: Charlie.
Dr. Newman is the immediate past president of the VVMA, an advisor for the NOVA Veterinary Technician Program, Vice President of the Loudoun Community Cat Coalition, board member of the Friends of Loudoun County Animal Services, and President of CHASE (Caring Hands Animal Support and Education).
Emily Evans, BVM&S Medical Director of Caring Hands Animal Hospital of Alexandria
Dr. Evans, Medical Director, is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh’s Royal School of Veterinary Studies in Scotland. She is a Virginia native and obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond. Prior to attending veterinary school, she worked as a receptionist and Practice Manager for Caring Hands. Her interests include internal medicine, anesthesia, and dentistry. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, hiking and traveling. She currently lives in Alexandria with her husband, Russell, two small children, and their world traveling lab, Skeeter.
Jennifer Heatherly, DVM
Dr. Heatherly, associate veterinarian, is a graduate of the University of Georgia. She has practiced veterinary medicine in both Georgia and Virginia. Her interests include dermatology, surgery, and feline medicine. She enjoys spending her free time with her husband, son and daughter, and cat, Greta.
Brian Neumann, DVM
Dr. Neumann, associate veterinarian, is a graduate of Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in Blacksburg, VA. Brian is a native of Bethesda, MD and attended Virginia Tech as an undergraduate. His veterinary interests include emergency medicine, surgery, and ultrasound. In his free time, he is very interested in scuba diving, fishing, Washington Redskins and Virginia Tech Hokies football, running, hiking, cooking and traveling. He is currently living in Fairfax, VA with his girlfriend Julie, and their dogs Lane and Gracie-Lou.
Katrin Ventocilla, MV
Dr. Ventocilla, associate veterinarian, graduated from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, Peru. Born and raised in Peru, she followed her love for animals and concerns for street dog welfare into vet school, graduating in 2008. During her studies, she completed a thesis on Avian Newcastle’s Virus, followed by a surgical internship at the Universidad de Buenos Aires in Argentina. She moved to the United States in 2010, and immediately began completing her equivalency degree. Dr. Ventocilla started with Caring Hands as a Licensed Technician until she completed her American Veterinary Certification.
Her interests include surgery, dentistry, and shelter medicine. In her spare time, she likes to run, dance to Latin music, travel, and spend time with family. She lives in Alexandria, VA with her husband Michael, 7 year old Peruvian yellow lab Sophie, and 7 year old cat Frenchie.
Emily Thornton, DVM
Dr. Thornton, associate veterinarian, graduated from Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine after getting her bachelors degree from Virginia Tech. Dr. Thornton recently moved to Arlington after spending 2 years working at a small animal practice in southeast West Virginia. She grew up in northern Virginia, and moved back to be closer to friends and family. Her special interests include cytology and internal medicine. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, watching movies, and spending time at the dog park with her rescue dog, Olive.
